What to Expect
Re-released under the Shaw + Smith maturation program: allowing wines to gain complex tertiary characters from careful bottle aging in our temperature controlled cellar. With age we see more savoury notes including dried herbs, tea, and earthy characters, with the primary fruit characters of youth becoming less prominent. The tannins also become softer and more integrated.
Growing and Making
Hand picked and fermented on skins in small fermenters with hand plunging. Aged in French oak barriques for 14 months.
2009 began with a cool spring, which resulted in a relatively small but high quality crop. A short burst of heat in late January had little impact as it occurred 5-6 weeks before harvest, and the autumn weather leading up to picking was cool and dry, which resulted in excellent flavour development and wines of freshness and elegance.
Although our wines always drink well on release, they can age well too. To allow these wines to be enjoyed with bottle age, we keep a little back each year, and cellar them in perfect conditions at the winery until they are showing the complexity and harmony that bottle age can bring.
Deep colour, vibrant hue; deep and compelling levels of ripe black fruits, savoury spices and well handled toasty oak; the palate is unctuous and silky, with black and red fruits combining with silky fine-grained tannins expanding across the palate with true grace and harmony; long and luscious.
Lester Jesberg - Winewise Volume 26 Number 6 February 2011
This is a beautifully made spicy dark cherry style which is perfectly poised and utterly delicious. One of Australia’s finest reds. (not yet released.) Excellent value.
Huon Hooke - Sydney Morning Herald 24 May 2011
Shaw & Smith regularly makes some of the smartest shiraz in the land. Very deep red-purple colour; the bouquet is spicy and ripe with ironstone and dark-fruit aromas. In the mouth it’s rich and concentrated, powerful and commanding, with brilliant ripeness and impressive length. Now to 2034.
