Growing and Making
From close-planted (5,555 vines/ha) low yielding vines at our Balhannah Vineyard, planted in 2005. It has a north-facing aspect and the soils are loam over clay, ironstone, quartzite, and shale.
Hand picked, sorted and fermented as predominantly whole bunches (70%) and the remainder whole berries in open fermenters, with gentle plunging and minimal working. Aged in 500L French oak puncheons for 14 months, followed by a further 14 months in bottle.
2014 was not without its challenges, with small crops due to some unsettled weather during flowering. In mid-February a string of half a dozen hot days ended with a significant amount of rain over 24 hours. The following four weeks of dry, mild, and sunny weather from late February was just what the vines needed, and the results are very exciting.
Our Shiraz blocks at Balhannah are planted at a high density of 5555 vines/ha, on a north-facing slope. The site has consistently given us Shiraz with lovely perfume, bright fruit, intensity, and balance. The 2014 is the second release of this wine, where we aim to capture the individual character and quality of this distinctive site.

A cooler 2014 vintage has sent this into peppery, stony and spicy mode. Indeed, it's really complex and nicely layered, especially in terms of the aromatics where wild red plums meet blackberries, and the oak is nicely integrated too. The palate has impressive finesse and finely detailed tannin texture. There's some spark to it, just as peppery cherries, raspberries and blackberries hold fresh and lively. A wine that speaks of purity and place, and one that's pared back and focused. Drink now to 2025+.
Huon Hooke - The Real Review - July 2016
Deep ruby colour with a tinge of purple. Intensely spicy aromas, with a trace of white pepper and a whiff of foresty stemmy character from the 70% whole-bunch fermentation. Background smoky notes; traces of chocolate and vanilla. The palate is medium to full-bodied and very elegant, the tannins chalky and fine-grained, running the full length of the palate and contributing to a cleansing, refreshing finish. Very intense, focused and long. A superb cool-climate style of shiraz. (Altitude: 380 metres). Drink 2016 to 2034.
