What to Expect
A fine boned Chardonnay that reflects the conditions of the vintage and the character of this unique vineyard site.
The 2014 is typified by good concentration of flavour as a result of the season's lower yields.
Growing and Making
Sourced exclusively from Shaw + Smith's picturesque Lenswood property. Planted in 1999, the vineyard has east and west facing aspects and reaches 500 meters above sea level. The soil is brown loam over clay with some broken shale and stone on the ridges.
100% Hand picked and whole bunch pressed. Fermented and matured on lees in 500L French oak puncheons (30% new) for 9 months.
2014 was not without its challenges, with small crops due to some unsettled weather during flowering. In mid-February a string of half a dozen hot days ended with a significant amount of rain over 24 hours. The following four weeks of dry, mild, and sunny weather from late February was just what the vines needed, and the results are very exciting.
Since purchasing the vineyard in 2012, significant investments have been made to further enhance the site. It had always shown potential for a single site wine and in 2014 a small amount was selected for our first 'Lenswood Vineyard' Chardonnay.
Huon Hooke - The Age, Epicure - August 2016
Indulge yourself. This new wine, from Shaw + Smith’s coolest vineyard (at 500 metres), is a screamer. A delicate yet powerful wine with tremendous precision and intensely focused flavours, citrus, malt, vanilla and mineral notes dominating. Creamy lees touches. Superb harmony; great wine.
Huon Hooke - The Real Review - July 2016
Bright mid to light yellow hue and a very complex, nougat-like bouquet with creamy lees touches, great intensity of flavour and focus. There are various citrus fruit aromas, a trace of malt and vanilla, the whole range of flavours and aromas beautifully balanced and no one thing dominating. The acidity is lively and refreshing, and all the wine's components are superbly harmonised. An exciting new addition to the S+S portfolio. (Altitude: 500 metres). Drink 2016 to 2026.
Mike Bennie - Delicious - September 2016
An immediate sense of high quality. Jeez, this smells decadent in stone fruit and citrus, rich with spicy wood, lively with flinty mineral character. For your best roast chicken ever.
