Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes
A complex, finely-textured Shiraz expressing the conditions of each vintage and the character of a unique vineyard site. 2017 was a striking season, unusually cool and a perfect year to show a single site. The wine is very fragrant, textural and detailed.

Growing and Making

Production Notes
From close-planted (5,500 vines/ha) low yielding vines at Shaw + Smith's Balhannah Vineyard, planted in 2005. It has a north-facing aspect and the soils are loam over clay, ironstone, quartzite, and shale. There was record rainfall throughout the growing season but importantly it reduced to average in November during flowering and was dry during March, the later part of ripening. Record low temperatures were also recorded resulting in a late, very cool vintage. Flavours are intense and the natural acidity is striking. Hand picked, sorted and fermented as whole berries and whole bunches, in open fermenters, with gentle plunging and minimal working. Aged in 500 litre French oak puncheons for 14 months, followed by a further 14 months in bottle.

Reviews

Bob Campbell, The Real Review - October 2020

Slightly edgy shiraz with pepper-spice, floral, violet, raspberry and spicy oak flavours. A taut, high-energy wine with a promising future, thanks in part to a backbone of fine tannins and impeccable fruit-acid-alcohol balance. 96 Points.

Angus Hughson, Winepilot.com - September 2020

If you have ever wanted to understand the impacts of stalks on shiraz then check this wine out with its aromatic lift and that distinctive touch of Chinese Five-Spice, which in this wine sit on top of fragrant cranberry and violet aromas.

It’s robust and tightly coiled on the palate, showing complex clove, pepper, meat and blackberry fruits. It’s also firm and tannic – only mid-weight but dense and energetic, packed with layers of liquorice and tarry flavour. Very young, this wine has a long way to run.
95 Points.

David Sly, Decanter - August 2020

Sharp-edged and serious, this raises a very different banner for what Australian Shiraz can be, from a cool, more elevated site. With its snappy bite of stalk and cherry, it suggests the slender refinement of Pinot Noir, but then the mid-palate rounds out with lush red berries and sprinkling of pepper in the tail. The nervy tension of this wine ensures the flavour keeps quivering in your mouth long after the last drop is drained. 98 points.

Jamessuckling.com - July 2020

A very complex nose with intense red berries, cherries and plums, swathed in complex spice aromas and strong, whole-bunch and oak influence, which combine to drive this to ever more complex heights. The palate has rich, ripe berries, smooth tannins and dark-chocolate flavors in abundance. The smooth tannins are so well crafted. Super fresh and articulate finish. Drink or hold. 97 points.

Angus Hughson, WISH Magazine - November 2019

From the Shaw & Smith single vineyard range comes this outstanding shiraz. It’s robust and tightly coiled, showing complex clove, pepper, meat and blackberry fruits. It’s also firm and tannic – only mid-weight but dense and energetic, packed with layers of liquorice and tarry flavour. It is very young and has a long way to run.
