Growing and Making

Production Notes
The 2019 growing season was one that challenged even the most experienced and well equipped vignerons. Those that made the most of it produced small crops of very clean fruit with wonderful flavour and intensity. Natural acidity is a feature in all of the wines despite the warm dry summer.

Story

Winemaker Notes
The Adelaide Hills was long considered too cool to ripen Shiraz. By the early 2000s, though, the potential for outstanding Shiraz from the right sites in the Adelaide Hills was compelling, and the first Shaw + Smith Shiraz was made in the 2002 vintage. Since then, Shiraz in the Hills has gone from strength to strength, its hallmarks being fragrance, intensity, and medium bodied elegance.

Reviews

Nathan Slone - Jamessuckling.com - October 2022

Lovely crunchy fruit to this, with spice and dried-meat undertones through the wine, from the nose to the palate. Medium body, fine tannins and a fresh and vivid finish. Tangy and bright. 94 Points.

James Halliday - The Weekend Australian - June 2022

A wine of towering richness and complexity, black cherries, liquorice, black pepper. Close your eyes, and this shiraz will give you a magic carpet ride to the upper reaches of the Rhone Valley. Most remarkable is the freshness of the wine, and the dark spices of a night time drink. 97 points.

Andrew Graham - Australian Wine Review - May 2022

40% whole bunches. 14 months in 1/3rd new French oak. An evocative smelling thing it is too – whole bunch cinnamon spice, red and blue fruits, a whisper of charcuterie and then a ripple of blueberry crumble. The medium bodied palate is finessed and yet ripe and plush, all at once, the alcohol even lobbing in some warmth though not intrusive. That palate is just so impressive – it’s inviting and plush and so perfect. Compelling in its balance and flavour. Maybe a little light on the tannins is the only criticism. Absolute top-flight Shiraz. 95 points.

Huon Hooke - The Real Review - May 2022

Deep red with tints of purple and a sweetly jammy blackberry and squishy mulberry aroma, plus a slight meaty overtone. The wine is lean and sinewy on the tongue with tense tannins, a trace of bitterness, and is medium bodied with moderate length. There's a Rhône-ish note to the nose. An elegant and stylish shiraz. 92 Points.

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front - April 2022

It feels neat and composed though it also boasts excellent concentration of fruit flavour. This puts the runs on the board and lets them speak for themselves. Kirsch, boysenberry, smoked bacon and cedarwood flavours, though the driver here is fruit and lots of it. Tannin, integrated, keeps thing taut-enough, while twiggy spice notes add breadth. The aromatics of this wine are quite wonderful, all sweet berried and exuberant, and the palate too is in fine form. 94 Points
